- Adjective - a part of speech that modifies a noun. They are specified by number (singular or plural) and gender (masculine, feminine, or None). Parts of speech that modify adjectives are adverbs.
- Adposition - a part of speech that modifies a noun. They include prepositions and postpositions.
- Adverb - a part of speech that modifies a verb, adjective, adverb, clause, or sentence. Parts of speech that modify adverbs are adverbs.
- Conjunction - a part of speech that connects two words, phrases, or clauses together.
- Noun - part of speech that names a (possibly abstract) person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are classified by case (subjective or objective), number (singular or plural), and gender (masculine, feminine, or None). Parts of speech that modify nouns are adjectives.
- Pronoun - a part of speech that substitutes in the place of a noun. Pronouns are classified by case (subjective or objective), number (singular or plural), and gender (masculine, feminine, or None).
- Verb - a part of speech that portrays action, occurrence, or state of being. Verbs can be characterized by valency (zero--for null subject languages like Spanish, intransitive, transitive, ditransitive), tense (currently past or present), mood (subjunctive or indicative), person (first, second, or third), number (singular or plural), and aspect (perfective or imperfective).
